Workforce1 Career Center

The NYFPC facilitated a tour of Brooklyn's Workforce1 Career Center.  Robert Walsh, Commissioner of the Department of Small Business Services (SBS) led a briefing and question and answer session on the remarkable 3,300 percent growth in the number of jobseekers being placed in jobs through the city's six Workforce1 centers.  Other speakers were: Melissa Wavelet, Assistant Commissioner of Workforce1 Career Center Program Management; Spencer Cronk, Senior Advisor at SBS; Sharon Joseph, Owner of Harlem Lanes who hired 30 of the center's jobseekers.  The briefing covered the success of the 2003 merger of the Department of Employment and the Department of Small Business Services, which is quantified by the increase in the six centers' job placements from 127 per quarter to 4,300 per quarter.  Following the briefing, the journalists were given a tour of the Workforcc1 Career Center facilities, as well as one-on-one interviews.
