Three Tours to Polling Places on Election Day, November 2, 2004

The Foreign Press Center is offering three tours to nearby polling places on Election Day, November 2:

 

TOUR ONE:  ARLINGTON COUNTY: NORTH AND SOUTH

 

Depart:  6:00 a.m. by bus from the Foreign Press Center

 

Return:  9:00 a.m. (approximate)

 

Meet:  Lobby of National Press Building

 

Details:  First stop is culturally diverse Clarendon, where you will view the early morning queues, observe inside the polling place, and interview any willing voters outside after voting.

 

Next up is bustling Crystal City, where you can observe the voting and speak with voters at the Calvary United Methodist Church across the street, where voters will be offered coffee and donuts.

 

Deadline for Registration:  6:00 p.m., Friday, October 29.

TOUR TWO:  SPRING HILL: A MELTING POT VOTES

 

Depart:  9:30 a.m. by bus from the Foreign Press Center

 

Return:  11:30 a.m. (approximate)

 

Meet:  Foreign Press Center, National Press Building, Suite 800

 

Details:  This bus tour will take you to Spring Hill, a culturally diverse area of Fairfax County that includes substantial Korean, Vietnamese, and Arab communities.  You will have an opportunity to view the voting process, inside and out, and interview any willing voters outside.  A Fairfax County election official will speak to you about the voting process and answer any questions.

 

Deadline for Registration:  6:00 p.m., Friday, October 29.

TOUR THREE:  WASHINGTON, D.C.: A STROLL TO A POLL

 

Depart:  2:30 p.m. from the Foreign Press Center on foot

 

Return:  4:00 p.m. (approximate)

 

Meet:  Foreign Press Center, National Press Building, Suite 800

 

Details:  This walking tour will visit Washington D.C.’s precinct 129, a largely African American community, only a brief stroll from the Foreign Press Center.  One of the FPC’s program officers will take you to the polls, where you will be allowed to view the voting process inside and out.  As with the other tours, interviews with willing voters are allowed but must take place beyond 40 feet from the polling place door.

NOTE:  These are flexible tours designed for flexible journalists.  Return times are approximate.  We have been advised that discreet photo opportunities generally will be available within these polling places, but not of voters in the process of voting, and the permission of photographing individual voters may be required.  Interviews of voters – only after they have finished voting -- are not allowed within 40 feet of the polling place entrance.
