Twenty journalists from the New York Foreign Press Center spent the morning of May 1 at Cheyenne Mountain Air Station, outside of Colorado Springs. The journalists were impressed with the fact that they were the first group allowed access since 9/11. Major Ed Thomas and Lieutenant Commander Dave Jenkins accompanied the group. After equipment check at the Visitors Center, Army Major Dave Johnson provided an initial briefing on the history of the facility.

The briefing inside the Command Center was provided by Canadian Brigadier General Hunter. The Air Warning Center briefing was hosted by Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Glover. That afternoon, at Peterson Air Force Base, Mike Perini, Director of Public affairs briefed on the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the United States Northern Command. Cheyenne Mountain, with its miles of tunnels, huge blast doors, spring-supported rooms, superb briefers and high-tech tracking equipment provided enough material for everyone.

The evening was spent in a tour of the historic Broadmoor Hotel. Some journalists have made arrangements wit the hotel to return and do stories on its historic relation to the area.

Friday stories, following the short-notice cancellation of the scheduled visit to Fort Carson, included the US Olympic Committee and training grounds (where the journalists toured, interviewed and were themselves interviewed in turn), Manitou Springs (historically a spa and now a casino town), the Garden of the Gods (a tourism story), and an afternoon visit to Pike's Peak, the purple-mountain majesty in "America the Beautiful," on a cog railway.
