Twenty-five foreign journalists from across Africa, South and East Asia, and the Caribbean visited Washington, DC and Miami, FL to cover the AIDS 2012 Conference. Media covered the Secretary’s speech to the conference plenary and had a group interview with the NIH’s Dr. Fauci after his presentation. Ambassador Goosby, the Global AIDS Coordinator, previewed the Secretary’s remarks in a Saturday press conference, and the media spent most of the weekend in media training at the Voice of America or at outside events like the Conference’s opening gala at the Kennedy Center and/ or at Wyclef Jean’s ‘Keep the Promise AIDS March’. Media also interviewed Timothy Ray Brown, the first person to be cured of AIDS. In Miami, the group visited the Miami Health Department and the Center for AIDS Research at the University where they were able to cover the latest in vaccine research. The tour concluded with a visit to Empower U, a community-based organization and free clinic founded by local woman who is HIV positive.
