WHAT: One of the key area of discussion of the Big Sky SOM 2 APEC meetings (May 19-21) is the importance of SMEs to encouraging economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region. The APEC 2011 USA Host Committee has organized a media briefing with government and private sector leaders to review APEC and SMEs.

WHO: Francisco Sanchez, United Stated Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade

Scott Price, President and CEO, Walmart Asia

Lance Trebesh, CEO , TicketRiver.com

WHEN: Friday, May 20th at 9:00 am

WHERE: Big Sky Media Filing Center – Lone Peak Café

TOPICS: - The role of SMEs in economic growth and development

- Outcomes of the SME meetings in Big Sky

- Creating an environment for SMEs to prosper in the Asia-Pacific

BACKGROUND: Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are innovation engines and represent the largest base of employment within APEC, but they face barriers to growth. APEC is working to address SME access to financing, advocate for more transparent business markets, aid in the capacity to internationalize and ensure protection of intellectual property rights.

· In the APEC region, SMEs account for 90 percent of all businesses and nearly 60 percent of the work force.

· SMEs are also frequently the driving force behind innovation -- and the commercialization of new products and services that are the lifeblood of our global economy.

· APEC is also working to knock down many of the barriers that inhibit SMEs from fully participating in the global economy.

The APEC 2011 USA Host Committee’s (apec2011usa.org) mission is to advance the US business agenda in the Asia Pacific region by creating high quality opportunities for private sector engagement during the US hosting of APEC 2011.
