Food security is key to ensuring social and economic stability for all economies.’

WHAT: One of the critical issues facing APEC economies is Food Security. The APEC 2011 USA Host Committee has organized a media briefing with private sector leaders to review APEC and the strategic framework for food security and to highlight private sector priorities and solutions.

TOPICS: Five key Food Security priority areas for APEC:

1. Renounce all export restrictions and end existing export restrictions on all food products.

2. Establish a permanent public-private partnership on Food Security with robust private sector participation.

3. Implement market-based approaches to dealing with post-harvest loss. Nearly 1/3 of the world’s food production is lost or wasted each year.

4. Increase regional efforts to strengthen food safety and enhance dietary health through science-based and harmonized approaches to standards.

5. Make markets work. Utilize risk management tools across the supply chain.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that by 2050 the populations of the planet will reach 9.1 billion. Not only will there be more people than ever before, but a larger proportion of these people will by and large be richer and more urban than is the case today. To feed this growing and changing population, food production needs to increase by more than 50% over current levels in the next few decades. Food security is key to ensuring social and economic stability for all economies.

The APEC 2011 USA Host Committee’s ( mission is to advance the US business agenda in the Asia Pacific region by creating high quality opportunities for private sector engagement during the US hosting of APEC 2011. The Host Committee will design, organize and execute the US APEC CEO Summit held in Honolulu in November 10-12; develop and participate in industry-driven events held in the United States throughout 2011 to coincide with Ministerial Meetings; and conduct education/outreach programs in coordination with USG and partner organizations focusing on the economic policy community as well as small and medium sized businesses and the general public. Host committee company members include: Aflac, Dow, Cargill Incorporated, Caterpillar, Chevron, FedEx, Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold Inc, General Electric, Google, I.M. Systems Group, Johnson & Johnson, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, Noetix Corporation, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA),Procter & Gamble, Sealed Air Corporation,, Underwriters Laboratories, Visa and Walmart.
