Tthe Foreign Press Center accompanied international media from Mexico, Colombia, Poland, Taiwan, Serbia, Korea, and China to the Johns Hopkins Medical Institute for a comprehensive tour on advances in medicine and clinical care. The journalists were briefed by a geneticist and professor of genetic studies at the medical college, followed by a tour of the newest, state-of-the art, “green” building on campus. In the hospital’s Simulation Center, doctors demonstrated how animatronic lifelike “human bodies” teach medical interns how to react in crisis situations. Journalists felt the “pulse” on a baby, and assisted in resuscitation techniques during a simulated heart failure. DNA specialists gave a sample demonstration of how gene sequencing analysis is accomplished from sample to computer generated data, and the tour completed with a visit to the 1889 Billings building, the site of revolutionary 19th century surgical innovations. One journalist remarked at the completion of the tour, “It was one of the most interesting and informative tours I have been on with the FPC, both personally and professionally.”
