Eleven journalists from Germany, China and Japan traveled with the FPC to Kentucky’s Bluegrass region to examine the economic, environmental, and regulatory issues facing the coal industry.
In Lexington, journalists visited the University of Kentucky’s Center for Applied Energy Research, where reporters spoke with researchers about the environmental impact of coal mining and new technology to make burning coal cleaner. Journalists also met with attorneys active in the state legislature’s debates on mine safety and environmental issues. The tour included visits with representatives of the coal mining and energy industries, as well as with state environmental and regulatory officials in Frankfort.
