WHO: The NY Foreign Press Center is hosting a tour to Colorado Springs, Colorado to visit Air Force Space Command with a focus on the Global Positioning Satellite.
WHAT: The U.S Air Force and Air Force Space Command have been diligent stewards of GPS since its conception in the 1970s and continue its commitment to this critical component of our national infrastructure. The current GPS constellation has the most satellites and the greatest capability ever. The Air Force will continue to pursue an achievable path maintaining GPS as the premier provider of positioning, navigation and timing for military and civilian users around the world.
Space Command Tour will consist of visiting:
· Headquarters of Air Force Space Command At Peterson Air Force Base.
· Schriever Air Force Base and meeting GPS commanders and controllers.
· Boeing and Lockheed Martin Complete United Launch Alliance in Boulder, CO.
· 302
nd Air Wing which uses GPS in aerial firefighting efforts.
The U.S. Air Force Academy is equivalent to West Point and the Naval Academy. Its mission is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character motivated to lead the U.S. Air Force in service to this nation.
Academy Tour will include:
· Meeting Academy leadership/ tour facilities.
· Aero lab visit and discussion with Dr. Stefan Siegel about wave energy research which harnesses hydroelectric power in the ocean.
· FalconSAT lab visit which is a satellite that cadets are building for a launch date in May.
· Interview with international cadets.
WHEN: December 2-3/4. (Arrival evening of Dec.1. Depart evening Dec. 3 or evening of Dec 4)
ACTION REQUIRED: If you are interested in participating in this tour,
please reply to this email no later than November 6 to reserve your space. There is a limited number for this tour. Please
indicate whether or not you will also participate in the tour of the Air Force Academy on December 4. To participate in this tour, you must be a registered journalist with the New York or Washington Foreign Press Centers and your FPC credentials must be current. Please do not purchase airline tickets until you receive confirmation.
DETAILS: To facilitate transportation, program coordination, and to maximize our time in Colorado Springs, all journalists who participate in this tour are asked to stay at the designated hotel. Journalists are responsible for own flight arrangements to/from Colorado Springs and their lodging reservations.
