Journalists participated in a reporting tour to North Dakota to get a first hand look at its diverse economy which includes energy, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing. It's energy policy has been called a model for the nation, with a range of traditional and renewable energy resources that include the largest potential wind energy production in the nation - the state has been called the "Saudi Arabia of Wind" - and the largest oil discovery in the U.S. in more than 30 years in the state's Baaken formation. In addition, North Dakota leads the U.S. in the production of 14 agricultural commodities, including canola, flaxseed, pease, and barley. Additionally, the agriculture industry is a huge contributor to the state's leading biofuels production, providing needed crops for renewable energy sources.
Journalists met with North Dakota state officials, ranchers, and energy technology experts.
