With the cooperation and support of WHA, FPC Washington coordinated travel for 9 journalists from the Caribbean and Central America to Washington DC from March 30 to April 3 to speak with experts on the 5th
Summit of the Americas. The trip allowed the journalists to meet in-person with U.S. government officials, OAS officials, think tank experts, and staff from Congress. Highlights included briefings with White House Advisor on the Summit of the Americas Ambassador Jeffrey Davidow, Congressman Elliot Engel (D-NY), WHA Assistant Secretary Thomas A. Shannon, and U.S. Ambassador to the OAS Hector Morales. The journalists also met with OAS Summit of the Americas Secretariat Director Richard Morris and Senator Chris Dodd’s (D-Conn) foreign policy staff.
The FPC also arranged for the journalists to meet with several NGO’s that work directly with the OAS on implementing programs for Summit of the Americas’ initiatives. The summit programs include a professional exchange program between the U.S. and Latin America, civil society programs in Central America, and primary education programs in the Caribbean. Tour participants represented media organizations from Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.
